Staying Motivated

Losing weight isn't easy. Keeping it off is even harder. Many people experience initial weight loss but subsequently gain it all back again, resulting in frustration and discouragement. The key to sustaining long-term weight control is to set realistic goals that are achievable.

Keep in mind that losing weight is a lifetime commitment that requires time and patience so stay focused and take small steps at a time.

However, even for the most committed, lapses can occur in your weight management regime. Should this happen, remember that you are changing your lifestyle and this is a challenge your body isn't accustomed to. Stay positive and look forward to the next step.

Here are some quick tips to keep yourself motivated and moving on:

  • Know your weaknesses – acknowledging your weakness for a particular food and avoiding locations or activities that often lead to a binge will help you to control yourself better.
  • Beat your cravings – when your cravings begin, don't rush straight to the fridge. Give yourself some time and the cravings will usually subside. If you must eat something, try to choose healthy foods that provide both nutrition and bulk.

And should you fall:

  • Forgive yourself! – remain calm and review the causes leading to the lapse. Re-evaluate your regime and ask yourself if it's realistic.
  • Take charge and move forward – don't be beaten by a fall but get up and move on.
  • Ask for help – Seek help from your doctor who will be able to provide safe and effective treatment and follow-up management.
